Which way does it go? (10-3-2024)

Cladding type, dimensions, orientation and other factors impact how a cladding support framing system must be designed to accommodate the cladding, installation and dimension requirements that may be specific to it and specific to the project where it will be used.  We often have discussions with design professionals where they have encountered contractor reported cost concerns with specific cladding support assemblies that they may have specified in the past.  Digging into those perceived problems, the root of the concern is often the specification of a product that does not work well or at all in a specific condition.  The issue is not really the cost, but the cost to make the assembly specified work, and the contractor is proposing options to overcome.  At times the proposed assembly cost may be higher than anticipated because the specified item and support configuration simply wont work for the selected cladding and dimensions drawn.

Cladding support assemblies are, well, hidden, and tend to be relegated to a minor position and simply pushed into delegated design or simply “provide cladding support assembly”.  Specific consideration needs to be given during design to avoid problems and appropriate solutions specified.
