Design Considerations – Custom Rooftop Planters (9-2-2025)

One of the many advantages that Hydrotech can offer is the ability to problem solve.  For example, Custom Rooftop Planters can enhance the look & feel of a podium deck but what people often do not think about is the challenges that come with it.

We would start by working with the design team to understand their vision & formulate a plan of action to achieve their desired result.   Often, that means offering alternative solutions that result in better waterproofing conditions, while the architect would confirm that aesthetically/functionally it is still the same, the structural engineer would confirm that it can be done, the GC would confirm that this approach is doable, properly translated & sequenced on the jobsite.

These images show the early stages of installing custom rooftop planters & rather than interrupting Hydrotech® Monolithic Membrane 6125® (MM6125®) with the steel walls & their penetrations, a poured in place curb would be casted where our membrane runs continuously under it, flashing the rebar.  The poured in place concrete entombs the flashed rebar keeping MM6125 continues across the deck.  The steel structural can then be installed to that concrete curb without penetrating the waterproofing membrane.  This method offers designers the freedom to imagine a whole new podium deck starting from a blank canvas.  Click here to learn more about design considerations.
