Performance Building Solutions
Commercial applications for continuous insulation, protected membrane roofing, vegetated roof assemblies, occupied roof space and plazas, geotechnical applications, air sealing, air barriers and weatherization. Let’s keep it simple to start and focus on rigid insulation solutions to meet your exterior design objectives and code.
Continuous Insulation Solutions
While most design and specification technical focus and discussion centers on air barriers and bulk water hold out, selection of insulation and assemblies related to insulation products tends to get muddled, with little consideration given to developing solutions that provide what the code technically defines as continuous insulation. ASHREA 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings provides the continuous insulation mandate:
“insulation that is continuous across all structural members without thermal bridges other than fasteners and service openings. It is installed on the interior, exterior, or is integral to any opaque surface of the building envelope.â€
No Z’s – composite or metal. No composite brackets. Simply, continuous insulation.
Composite brackets and Z’s do in fact introduce thermal breaks and are thermally conductive. Testing by recognized authority Morrison Hershfield clearly shows that. Not only are they thermally conductive, but they make it extremely difficult to install the insulation without creating voids.
“First and foremost, a high performance building must use substantially less energy than a similar typical building as defined by the most current energy codes.â€David W. Altenhofen AIA
If you want to use less energy you need to focus on the insulation package, how to create one that is truly continuous, accommodates the finishes you choose and meets NFPA 285.
The Dow family of Thermax ISO and Styrofoam Extruded insulation solutions are an essential element in every wall design and allow you to accomplish your designs while meeting code mandates for energy and fire. They can also be used as sheathing products to provide insulation, air, moisture and water barrier with great efficiency in the right designs and applications.
“It is the BSC team’s judgment that the lowest cost, highest performing rainwater management technology is rigid polymeric foam sheathing with sealed jointsâ€Water Management of Noninsulating and Insulating Sheathings
Rigid insulation is the best way to provide a continuous insulation package and predictable performance over time. Dow Styrofoam extruded and Dow Thermax iso family of products provide high long term R value performance and can be used with a broad variety of cladding and wall assembly choices to simplify design and lower costs while meeting code and NFPA 285 compliance. Â Assemblies using Dow rigid insulation can incorporate a wide variety cladding assemblies to provide modern, attractive and functional structures.
No gaps. Continuous insulation. High performance buildings.
The walls are simply the starting point. Don’t stop there. DuPont Performance Building Solutions has your building covered in many innovative ways that focus on energy efficiency.
